Within the Super Smash bros website, there are a bunch of thumbnails for each character. When looking at the thumbnail, you only see part of the character, but when you click on them, it brings you to another page that shows the full portrait of the character. Not only does it show the full character portrait, but it also shows in-game detail of the character. In my opinion, this website is a good example of how to optimize images. The thumbnails of the character are small, which quickly shows the character and saves space on the website. When there's a new character, there's a big image of that new character, telling you that there's something new added to the game. When going to a specific characters page, it shows a large image of them, telling you that they're the focus of that page. Overall, the Super Smash bros website effectively uses images to create an outstanding website.
